Playstation VR keynote speech and hot development talent on show at the November VRTGO Conference in Gateshead.
The north east’s burgeoning virtual reality industry takes another big step forward this November with VRTGO’s second annual conference. Organiser Secret Sauce has proudly announced the addition of Playstation VR as keynote speakers, with senior games developer Jed Ashforth on hand to talk about the company’s VR beginnings and its direction for the future.
Pitched at developers, technologists and VR buyers, VRTGO promises not just to showcase cutting edge VR experiences but to highlight the best in regional talent. To encourage newcomers this year Secret Sauce created a competition with virtual reality software company nDreams. The winner gets a chance to exhibit their prototype at VRTGO on 12 November and receives mentoring from nDreams, a free affiliation to VRTGO Labs and publicity for their work. They also get a visit to Sony Computer Entertainment’s offices for a design consultation session from the Project Morpheus team and the opportunity to play exclusive demos.
Founder of nDreams Patrick O’Luanaigh was an ex-creative director at both Eidos and Codemasters, responsible for games titles including Tomb Raider Legend, Hitman Blood Money and Conflict: Desert Storm. He said: “We’re thrilled to be sponsoring the VRTGO competition and can’t wait to see what fresh ideas and original concepts the VR enthusiast community put forward. Being able to offer mentoring to those behind the winning entry is an incredibly exciting prospect; we’re eager to share our skills and experience from the forefront of the fast-moving world of VR development.”
Carri Cunliffe from Secret Sauce added: “We are seeing some interesting VR concepts from small companies and students and we thought VRTGO could give them a platform to showcase their work.”
VRTGO conference-goers get the opportunity to see where virtual reality is headed and try VR experiences from nDreams, CCP Games, Coatsink, VRgo, Chronicles VR, Two Big Ears, Spearhead Interactive, SLR and 360 Events. Speakers at the event include CCP Games, nDreams, Pixel Ripped, PlayCanvas, Whispering Gibbon and Crossrail. The conference pass also includes a networking breakfast, VR expo, lunch and ‘kick-ass’ after party.
One of the supporters at VRTGO Labs is RMT Technology. An accountancy firm by trade, RMT is also a Fujitsu expert partner that helped VRTGO Labs in getting started, by sponsoring three high end Fujitsu Celsius M740 Power Workstations, with multiple NVIDIA Quadro K5200 graphics cards.
Perhaps just as important to the business of VR in the north east is solid consultancy on how to plan financial strategy, cashflow and efficient company structure. RMT will provide business, tax and accounting advice to VRTGO users in the form of regular drop-in workshops, giving future VR gurus the financial nous they need to succeed.
